About Lasse
I am visiting University of California, Berkeley as a postdoc founded by the Danish independent research foundation, The Carlsberg Foundation’s ‘Internationalisation Fellowship’, and will be conducting ethnographic research into the design practices of surgical robots. My project is titled "Designing Human-Robot Symbiosis: Re-configuring the socio-technical infrastructure of future surgical practice" and explores how the combination of robots and surgeons will affect the socio-technical setup of the operating room. The project asks if the coming of a new generation of surgical robots will render possible an even closer collaboration among humans and robots? And if so how will tasks, risk and responsibility be distributed among humans and robots? How will the surgeons be able to adapt their knowledge and skills to new surgical robots? My project seeks to elicit a realistic and empirically grounded picture of the challenges and issues faced by robot designers in their efforts to create the operating theatre of the future.
