PhD Candidate, George Washington University
About Tariq
I'm a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anthropology at George Washington University. My research broadly focuses on the intersection of language, labor, and technology in the Arabic-speaking world. My dissertation uses ethnographic methods to trace how IT workers in Amman, Jordan transform and reconceptualize Arabic as they produce artificial intelligence models within a global tech industry predicated on inequitable divisions of labor and extractive approaches to local knowledge. Before beginning my doctoral studies, I completed a master’s degree at Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and worked as a translator and reporter in Amman.
